As a young boy, Sam Coogler and his brother Joe tended to mix it up a bit. To separate the boys, their father William, a Ballantine-area builder, would take Sam out with him on jobs. Sam paid close attention and, by age 13, was taking an active part in his father’s building projects. Coogler has been building ever since, including during a period when he was employed by the City of Columbia. In the mid-1970s he started his own building company, Coogler-Bilt, which he runs with his wife Pat.
His building credits are many. Coogler purchased the first lot in Harbison and has constructed more homes there than any other individual builder. Coogler-Bilt homes can be found throughout the Irmo/Chapin/Lake Murray. The firm has been active in construction of patio homes as well as larger, traditional family homes.
Among priorities for Coogler is ensuring that the houses he builds are accessible for people with disabilities. Coogler suffered (and completely recovered from) a stroke many years ago, which gave him a new awareness. As a result, many of his homes feature extra-wide doorways for wheelchairs, and small touches like levered door openers rather than hard-to-open knobs.
Although the style of homes he’s built over the years has changed with the times, what has not changed is Coogler’s commitment to building a quality home from the ground up. He also credits listening to customers. “I’d say patience is the most important quality you need to succeed as a builder,” Coogler suggests. It’s also essential when working with subcontractors, many who have been with Coogler for more than a decade.
When Pat and Sam Coogler aren’t building homes, they’re enjoying a Lake Murray residence Sam built for the couple and a beachfront home near Charleston where they enjoy fishing and relaxing.
